AOV contribution in Suriname — 4%, and when you don't pay it

AOV stands for Algemene Ouderdomsverzekering: Suriname's state old-age pension. The contribution is collected through the payslip and is one of the fixed deductions on your salary.

How much is the AOV contribution?

The AOV contribution is 4% of gross pay. Overtime counts towards the base, so in a month with overtime the AOV is calculated on that extra amount as well.

Unlike wage tax, AOV is not progressive. There are no brackets and no ceiling: the percentage applies to the whole gross wage.

When do you stop paying AOV?

Once an employee has reached pension age, no AOV contribution is withheld. Wage tax and the other contributions still apply.

The salary calculator has an option for this — "Pension age — skip AOV". Tick it and the AOV line disappears from the breakdown, raising net pay by the contribution.

How to check AOV on your payslip

Find that month's gross wage, multiply by 4%, and you have the figure that should appear as AOV. If it differs, overtime or a correction for an earlier period is usually the cause.

Frequently asked questions

Is AOV the same as wage tax?
No. AOV is a social insurance contribution at a flat percentage, while wage tax is progressive and calculated on the taxable annual wage. They are separate lines on the payslip.
Does the employer pay AOV too?
The AOV in the calculation is the employee contribution withheld from gross pay. For employer costs the calculation includes the employer FVO contribution and the employer share of APF.
